Why Prebiotics and Enzymes Matter

I wanted to address prebiotics and enzymes in follow up to my recent one titled, These Probiotics Changed My Life, and address prebiotics and enzymes and why they matter.

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are food for your probiotics. It’s fibre which passes through your digestion system until it reaches the colon where it then ferments and feeds all of your gut bacteria helping it to flourish.

Prebiotics matter because if you do not have a diet that is rich in fibre (which many of us do not get the recommended 30 grams of fibre a day) then there is nothing for our gut bacteria to use as fuel. So, if you know you lack in fibre, take a prebiotic! If fibre rich foods such as beans, leafy greens, broccoli and cauliflower make you gassy, it is even more important that you look into prebiotics, enzymes and probiotics!

Enzymes

Enzymes are responsible for the breakdown of carbohydrates, fat, and protein. This is great because your probiotics will be able to work on helping you to digest these broken down macronutrients!

Digestive enzymes are normally produced by the body whereas prebiotics are not produced by the body but rather ingested.

Enzymes matter because they are naturally produced by the body, however, if you do not produce enough of these enzymes you may experience gastrointestinal issues.

Which should I take?
